Apple MacBook Pro 15.4″ (2010) Loud Buzzing Grinding Noise – Repaired
Issue with Laptop:
Customer came in with a 2010 Apple MacBook Pro 15.4″ Laptop. The MacBook Pro would power on and function normally, but there was a very loud grinding and buzzing noise. The customer was a little worried and was not using the MacBook, thinking that the issue may cause more damage
to the machine with use. We will thoroughly test the unit to find out where the sound is coming from.
After opening up the bottom of the MacBook, it was clear that the sound was coming from the left fan. The floating bearing had failed and was causing the loud sound. We will go ahead and replace the left fan and that should take care of the sound and prevent further overheating issues with the Mac.
We successfully replaced the left fan on the MacBook and the machine is now running very smooth without any issues. We had the part in stock and the customer picked up his computer 2 hours after he dropped it off.
Total Cost of Repairs:
Repairs ended up costing the customer only $79.99 + tax ($19.99 for the part and $60.00 for labor).
What to do if you find yourself in this same situation:
If you find yourself in this same situation, its best to stop using the MacBook and find a Mac Repair specialist. Although the sound itself will not harm the machine, the fan not working properly could definitely cause the machine to overheat and cause irreversible damage to the logic board.
